Pipe thread sealant?
Just curious as to what everyone uses for sealant on their pipe threads. I have used teflon tape for years but have been using more "sealant in a tube" from loctite or permatex lately.
Interestingly, The directions from a Holley fuel pump says use "NO" sealant on the pipe threads at all. What is the concensus? |
Re: Pipe thread sealant?
i have always used liquid teflon.

Re: Pipe thread sealant?
Teflon paste and thread are actually not sealants. They are used to allow the joints to be tightened more, hence the teflon. The taper of the thread is what is suppose to seal the joint.
Alot of shops use Locktite products as the dry well and actually do seal the space in the joints. |

Re: Pipe thread sealant?
Then would grease or anti-sieze provide an equivlant result?

Re: Pipe thread sealant?
Why not use the "yellow" Teflon tape made specifically for threaded fuel connections? Any decent parts house stocks it and it will not leak!
|
Re: Pipe thread sealant?
Teflon tape is not allowed in my shop. It can reduce the friction so much that the fitting still feels loose. In the case of an intake it is easy for the taper to crack the boss on the manifold. If the intaller is not carefull to start the tape after the first thread you will find loose bits of the tape in the fluid. Learned this the hard way years ago when it plugged a carb jet. We use Loctite PST or hydraulic sealent.

Re: Pipe thread sealant?
Properly applied the tape is fine to many use to much two layers is all that is needed, I in turn have had several bad experiences using liquids sealers where it got into places it should have. Check the links below in the long run the yellow will save you grief, I have used it for 20 some odd years with -0- problems.

Re: Pipe thread sealant?
Anyone ever use the sealant that GM has for head bolts? I found that stuff to work really well.

Re: Pipe thread sealant?
I really like a product called leaklock (I believe its called, don't have it in front of me) It is a light blue color and is basically a cross between thread sealer and loctite. If you have a fitting that is not quite tight enough, but won't make another turn, this stuff works great. Once it sets up, the fitting will not move. Also use Rector seal, it is very similar to the above.
Definetely no teflon tape on fuel lines!!! |
Re: Pipe thread sealant?
You non believers should take a moment to read the links I posted, the tape I use is specifically formulated for both petroleum distillates and inert gases. White Teflon is another whole story, many have not been properly trained to use specific products and do screw things up.
The head bolt sealer is a very good product but also improperly used in most cases, 90% of the users apply it to the bolt only, a small dab should be put into each thread bore to be pushed along onto the threads. Many a block has been ruined buy not applying it properly, this is especially true with raw water cooled blocks that do not have the help of corrosion preventives in anti freeze. |

Re: Pipe thread sealant?
teflon tape in a no-no for sure. the special tape mentioned is as stated upon disassembly it cracks or can ruin the thread in which you are trying to seal, similiar to the Loctite thread sealing compound. for the last 10 years plus i have been using the liquid sealing compound which has teflon in it, which provides lubrication and reduces heating of the thread which commonly occurs during the instalation process on a pipe thread. also if the sealant becomes a contaminant, it usually will disolve instead of becoming debri which can due much more harm.

Re: Pipe thread sealant?
MOP; where do you get the yellow tape? Monstaaa which teflon liquid do you use?
If the main purpose is lubrication, why not moly or grease? |

My parts house stocks it, I woulld ask yours to order it for you. |
Re: Pipe thread sealant?
I'm In The Performance Plumbing Business And I See Bad Teflon Tape Job's Everyday. Holley Was Told To Not Use Anything On Threads Because They Are All Metal To Metal Seals. We Use N-d 420350-50 On All Systems Without Any Problems. This Compound Is A Teflon Base With A Anti Galling Agent For Use On Stainless Steel Fittings. It Works On All Media's
Fuel,compressed Air,natural Gas, Oil, Water. |
Re: Pipe thread sealant?
I am a steamfitter by trade, and have been in the piping business, for 35 years. Pipe dope is actually designed to be a thread lubricant, not a sealer, although some do help after they set up. The best single pipe dope we have used over the years is Loktite PST. It is a great antigalling dope used for Stainless steel and alloys. You cannot use it on PVC or CPVC. I believe the sealer that comes with ARP head bolts is infact, PST. The bad thing about it is the price, if you use a lot.
Remember what ever brand of liquid dope you use, you only put in on the male thread, and you should not have to use a lot. That is how you end up with the dope in the system. |

the moral to this story is,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
