502 Mpi?
Is this motor reliable or are they high maintenance? or is the 502 EFI more reliable? Thanks for any input.

The 502 EFI and MPI are the same thing.
Merc. just changed the nomenclature when they introduced throttle body injection on other engines in the line up. ( there were some engines that were TBI and some that were port injected (MPI), the 502 was always port injected, but they're all classified as EFI ) They are about a reliable as anything out there. |
looking for a pair if anyone has two

Thanks JaayTee!

The MPI name also came out in 1996 when they switched to Gen VI roller blocks. Look for engine serial # 802600 or higher to get a Gen VI roller block. Below that is Gen V or IV.

Thanks you guys..... its kinda hard to find a mid to late 90's 24 pantera with something bigger than a stock 502mpi. I wanted to know for sure if the mpi is a safe choice. Thanks again!

Good motors, forged internals. Easilly 1000 hour motors as long as your maintenance is good. The stock fuel pump is prone to go out at some point on you and the injectors may or may not live forever, Chevron wtih Techroline is good for cleaning GM injectors. Internally they are pretty sound for the 415 hp they produce.
