H2O plumbing for intercooler
I've heard of a number of ways I should run the plumbing for my intercooler. some were- T off the pressure side of the fresh water pump, install a sea strainer for the engine and run a port off of that to the intercooler, use a completely separate sea strainer fed by a separate pickup, etc. etc. etc...
I don't know if there is a number of different ways I can do it, or only one way it should be done. So, I would like those of that have intercoolers to tell me how yours is plumbed. And especially from you engine builders as to your recommendations, Thanks, Gordo |
Using a sea strainer for the IC is the best method. But, you must also assure you have adequate water pressure for the engine, especially if you remove the thermostat or run a bypass. This usually means at least a drive with low water pickup or transom mount pickup. Teeing the sea water pump would be a last resort as it is very difficult to feed the IC and still provide adequate water pressure. Another option would be a dual stage sea water pump.

Whipple sends a separate pick up just for the intercooler. Thats what I'm using. I also picked up a small sea strainer to catch large debris. Whipple says sand will flow right through the intercooler.

Separate pickups, separate strainers, pressure regulaters with pop-offs, this is recommended by the manufacture, Gene at Lightening Performance (LOTO) has set up 2 of my boats this way and have never had a problem. Need to blow out the water when winter comes or you have a problem!

I ran mine from pump straight to intercooler, then to oil cooler, then motor. never had a over heating problem... running 12 lbs. boost making 1078 hp.
