Turn your motor into a 496 and save $

He may be right. It may be less to do yours into a 496.. Also yes the 496 is a little fatter than the 454/502's.. AS far as the Y pipe I dont remember if they are the same or not.. You can compare them on my parts look up on our site.. ;) Jamie

The 454 motor mounts will work provided you don't have the offshore type. The placement of the mounts is the same but the offshore types have a cradle that will not clear the larger oil pan on the 496.
The exhaust risers are spaced slightly wider by about a half inch. PITA. I had thru hull and a Y pipe with captains choice selectors. The Y-pipe and captains choice had to go and a block off had to be fabricated. I connected to the thru hull using flexible couplers and a section of polished tubing. This allowed me to slightly toe in the exhaust to mate with the old tips. This was better than cutting new holes thru the transom. The electrical harness needs to be lengthened since the 496 connection is on the back of the engine. The connector is the same. Great upgrade. The 496 is sweet motor compared to the 454. No regrets. You should add an additional in-line fuel filter. |
I replaced my 454 with a 496. I run my exhaust straight back with rubber hose. No problems there. The 496 is a few inches taller. My boat has a low profile and it BARELY fit height wise. I DIDN'T have the wire harness issue that nighthawk mentioned. It was a pretty easy swap.
