Valve Covers

Anybody know if the Moroso tall aluminum valve covers will work with CMI Elbow Tops on a 454 Mag MPI? My boat is away in storage at the moment, so I can't measure it easily. I am planning on adding a set of roller rockers, and will need the additional height. I just can't see paying $200 - $300 for valve covers on this engine. The Moroso ones are about $80.00.

Hey Jayhawk,
To answere your pushrod question, you don't need to change them when you go to roller rockers.
Also, you can cut the drip rods out of your stock valve covers to clear the roller rockers. That is what Merc Racing did to the stock GM valve covers on the 500s. Oh yea, they painted them blue too...

Who's conversion kit has the self aligning Roller Rockers? What I have been looking at in the Harland Sharp and others aren't self aligning and require guide plates & pushrods. Who's kit do you have?

You don't need self aligning rockers, you have guide plates and good HO pushrods stock.
Just buy conversion studs (3/8 to 7/16), to replace the non adjust shoulder bolts, and roller rockers.

So it has guideplates and hardened pushrods from the factory? So all I really need to do is get the studs/rockers and a pushrod length checker. That way I can set the geometry correctly and order the correct length pushrods for the new setup.

99.9% sure these are the studs you need. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

Then just grind off the drip tabs. You may also have to grind off the corners of 2 of the roller rockers to clear the baffles on the valve covers depending on which rockers you get. For added clearance, you can add a thick valve cover gasket in addition to the stock rubber gasket. I did this on a Gen V 454 Mag.

Thanks Griff. I ordered a set of those today. I haven't decided on rocker arms yet, still trying to find the best deal. I talked with Randy of Harland Sharp yesterday and he talked about a series of rocker arms they carry that don't need to be ground to clear the covers. I didn't see them on the website, so I may need to call him back to get a part number.

EDIT: I looked again on the HS website. They have what is called the Diamond Series that is clearanced for stud girdles. Unfortunately, they are almost twice the price. $400 at Summit!!

I have ran harland sharp rockers for years on both gen. v & vI with no problems. I have ran EMI alum. covers on the last motors, But I did run tall moroso on another, But with EMI headers.

Those are the studs I bought.

Griff, did you install 1.7 or 1.8 ratio rockers or your 454Mag?
Did you notice any extra power?

Hey Jayhawk,
You go first, it's still too cold in these parts to work on the boat.

jayhawk261 04-18-2007 11:47 AM

I've gotta do the steering first. I'm probably going to order the rockers this week. It looks like just getting to them will require exhaust removal. I don't know that I'm feeling that sporty this early! I guess we'll see:D

I used the Summit brand roller rockers in a 1.7 ratio. I upgraded the cam and needed them for clearance.

BTW, the Crane Gold's no longer need to have the corners ground off. They changed the desogn a little.

Jayhawk,
I have a set of Harland Sharp rockers 8 1.7 and 8 1.8 ratios I used for less than 1 hour. I added them while the boat was in the water trying to get more lift on the intake side. I got nervous and did not want to risk coil bind because I was at the limit for the springs. This year I just changed cams and springs to get the extra lift. And bought a complete set of 1.7.
So if you are interested before I put them on Ebay PM me.
