Borg/warner tranny Q's
I have borg/warner velvet trannys in my scarab. The port drive (TRS) prop spins slowly when the boat is in neutral. Any ideas what causes this?

clutch packs?
|
Foward clutches are starting to get warped, will work for a while but clutches will need to be replaced when they get worse, usually they weld together and the trans locks into foward will get you home but a very scary when you go to dock

Sometimes the bleed holes in the drum doesnt let all the fluid out. This will sometimes cause the drive to chatter or very slowly turn at idle. Or the worst is a bout to happen and the forward clutch pack is going out of it.

Thanks for your help guys(should have posted this in drives and lowers) This is my first boat resto and im lovin it , very expensive though. Sounds like I'll be pullin trannys. Thanks again!

Do not pull your trannys!
I've seen boats run for a decade on warped clutches. The worst that will happen is that they ill slip and burn up. This rarely damages anything in the trannythat's not replaced in a rebuild anyway. Gary |
Call Eric # 330-273-8291... he specializes in trans work.

Make sure the shifter is adjusted right and fully in neutral.
Also must go fully into foward or tranny will not live long. I have several Borg 72's but no tailstocks. Most had a gear reduction unit on them for inboards. You can easily get the parts from a reg. transmission supplier and do it yourself. |
