Merc. used 800cfm Holley on the HP500.

chevalcabre 05-06-2007 08:44 AM

is there any advantage to use 850 cfm electric choke holleys ??

DiamondPerformance 05-06-2007 09:01 AM

No, bigger is not better, unless you plan to make upgrades in the future, electric chokes are not needed either.

The carb off an original HP 500 was number 9022. I have another one I bought that is also listed as a 800 cfm marine carb. I have one of each. Holley carbs are listed on this site.

A buddy just built 540's out of his carbed 500's. I'm sure he'd make you a good deal on his stock carb's since he had to go bigger. PM "runnin gun" here on OSO for the details and tell him I told you to contact him.

i look on the holley site...the 9022 dont have electric choke as the originals do have electric chokes with 2 wires connecting to them...
i remember last year when i bought the carb for my other 35 fountain, it came in with the choke electric etc....plugged the wires and it was easy... i dont understand why the originals have the electric chokes and the ones holley sells dont..

is everyone sure the 9022 is what is needed ? and not the 850 cfm elec choke ?

Griff 05-06-2007 08:09 PM

You do not need a choke on a boat. get the 800cfm's or HP830's.

Sure looks like an electric choke to me, and yes, this is an original 9022.

Made me just get up out of my comfortable chair and check. I thought it had an electric choke.

Good thing I keep my collection of four carbs and two intakes on the kitchen counter. :)

High performance version 830cfm with no choke tower.

I have an old CP Perf book that lists it as Holley part #80558. I just looked and they must have quit making it though as neither holley or summit shows anything on their websites for that part#.

Also, you should be able to add an electric choke to any holley with a manual one. You just have to buy the kit.

jdub 05-07-2007 05:47 AM

I bought the 9022 with manual choke, it's the only way it comes now. By the way how is the best way to remove the choke?

chevalcabre 05-07-2007 07:07 AM

so it is a fact that the 9022 comes without the elec choke...only in manual choke...

did anyone buy the 9022 and converted it back to he original elec. choke ?

or does anyone have orig. PERFECT used units ?

what would happen if i installed 850 cfm with elec. choke ?

Griff 05-07-2007 01:23 PM

Its the same carb. I'm guessing Merc just added the electric choke or had Holley do it special for them. I'm sure you'd be able add an elec choke.

Trust me, you don't need it anyway.

850 cfm would have to be jetted richer and would not have as good of throttle response.

If you must........:D
