What is acceptable from Carillo?
 

I am building two brand new back up motors with all new top drawer parts.

My machinist/engine builder called me today. Told me he had some bad news. 16 of the 18 Carillo Rods are not in spec. (I assumed the 2 spares are the good ones).

All 16 have pin ends honed too large by 1 to 3 thousandths. All 16 have rod ends that are too large by the same amount and have taper from one side to the other by 3 to 6 ten/thousandths.

For a big dollar engine (x2) and $245 per rod, he and I feel that is not acceptable.

I have used Carillo exclusively for the last 4 engines I have had built. I have never had this happen. Usually they are ready to go right out of the box.

What are your opinions? What should I ask Carillo to do?

I would be calling Carillo. Something doesn't sound right?

Something is definitely not right there. The total clearance on the small ends is usually only .001" or so, depending on the builders preference, so .001" to .003" too big is definitely way out of spec. The same for the big end which is even more important because the size is what holds the rod bearing in place (bearing crush) There is only a 1/2 thousanth ( .0005" ) total size allowance in the size of the big end and there really should be no taper.

The size variations you show are not acceptable for even the least expensive stock rod.

I am sure that Carrillo would replace the rods if they are indeed that bad. Have your engine builder call them and see what they say.

We have been using Carrillo rods since they have been in business. They are WITHOUT a doubt, the best steel rod on the market! Very hard to believe this. I have never had an issue with thier product, but if it is true they will correct the problem. First Class company!

I have never had a problem before either. I was shocked to say the least. I was informed Carillo has new ownership and their main guy left. Not sure that has anything to do with it, it should not.

I was also advised to look at Pankl rods in the future.

Carrillo rods are the best in the business!!!Most of the Nascar teams use them and I cant believe the tolerances you posted are real:eek:

Me neither. I too consider them the best. My Machinist/short block assembler is very thorough and I have worked with him and Carillo on several engines over several years. Never had this problem. All we have done in the past is balance them and they are ready to go.

I am stumped.

Maybe.....:D but there is not much difference other than Big end thickness. I use Chev diameters with custom cranks.
