trs rubber boot question
 

On my TRS drive, it has the rubber boot that is outside the engine compartment covering the drive shaft. Is this suppose to have a small slit at the bottom to allow water to get out? I don't think so, but when doing an inspection saw that it had a small slit at the bottom.

Drive Shaft/U Joint Bellows is the part in question. It has a slit at the bottom.

NO. Pull the drive and greese the u-joint and gimble bearing. Hopfully no damage yet. Replace the bellows.

Only got out 4 times last year for a total of 6 hours of running time so I am optimistic about it.

Do I need the bellows tool to put this on?

No bellows tool is needed but make sure you reach in and check that rear bearing in the transmission tailstock. If its hard to turn or you feel ANY rough spots it needs to be replaced.

After getting off line with work I went out and pulled the outdrive.

Bellow is damaged as stated above. No drive oil or tranny oil in the bellow. So that looked promising.

Carrage bearing is shot (rear bearing in the tranny tailstock), so replacing that.

O ring/metal gasket for outdrive oil transfer (can someone tell me the name of this so I can order) is on it's way out the door. If you look at the bell housing in my mercruiser manual they call it a "o" Ring.

the yokes are good, still have grease on them.

I noticed when taking the trim cylinders off if I touched my screw driver from the cylinder to the outdrive I could produce a little spark. I am certain this is not good as well. Any ideas?
