what should the total advance be on a 502-550 hp motor at 3600 to 4000 rpm?

Should be in the 30-34* range, but it will also depend on the timing curve and specifics of the engine.

Depends on compression ratio, cylinder heads and fuel quality. I would not want to see over 36 total, prefer 34 and all in by 3000.

If engine is 9.5:1 compression 36 degrees total is fine. If your 10.0:1-10.5:1 compression 34 degrees .
