Baja's And No Step Bottom...

All of the Baja's I've seen don't have step bottom hulls.

Do they offer step bottom hulls on their boats?

Just curious if anyone knows the real reason why?

I think they made one step bottom boat a few years ago for R & D. They don't have stepped hulls in production now, nor have they ever.

baja292islander 05-21-2007 04:51 PM

I think they don't make step hull so they ride better. We have lots of people who tell us how good ours rides. I know the step hulls are faster but don't ride as good as ours does.

bsirk 05-21-2007 05:05 PM

Your good ride is coming from your steep deadrise, distinctly characteristic of a Baja. I don't think I would say a stepped hull would make the ride any worse (definitely faster though). My boat's stepped and has a padded keel, and she rides like a dream. Completely speed minded, but still handles the rough stuff (within reason of course) for a 27 footer.

And, no, I've never seen or heard of a stepped Baja.

StillHaulin@63 05-21-2007 05:16 PM

Baja has probably spent a great deal of time and effort in identifying their market.
If it ain't broke ..... why fix it!

Those who prefer the speed of a stepped hull probably wouldn't buy a Baja anyway

I bet lawyers have something to do with it...

Did you see where Baja purchased Checkmate. It would not shock me to see a stepped hull Checkmate. but could they get rid of the porpoise.:D

Baja, the company, didn't buy Checkmate. A former Baja CEO did.

Griff,

Thanks for the correction, Didn't mean to pass along bad information.

I'm a big fan of the Checkmate look. I have owned 2, sold them both because of the ride.

There's the correct answer.

1. They sell a lot of boats

2. Their parent company ( Brunswick) has deep pockets

3. Most of their customers come from non stepped hull
boats, and don't know the handling difference between
the two, which could lead to problems.....and lawsuits:eek:

Agreed ...

What's the upside for Baja were they to invest in developing a stepped hull version?

All you needed to do is add 12X24 EMI tabs. The Checkmates need long tabs. Great boats.:evilb:

The ride is great if you know how to drive them. I have owned 2 Checks too.

I knew someone had to get the ONE that didn’t ride like a bucking bronco……

just kidding, I tried adding trim tabs, (helped a little) called the factory and tried a few more things. Got it to where it was ok with a light load of gas and only one or two people in the boat. Ran out of things to try and a few people I talked to said that is the way Checkmates are designed to ride. I still believe there was something wrong with the set up. This was a few years ago (before I was a member here) with everyone’s knowledge here I think someone could have helped me find the problem and I would still have the boat.

Have you seen the pics of the new Checkmates! (see the checkmate forum) Maybe it is time to try a another one.

You nailed it right on the head: lets just say it and get it over with-:evilb:
1.-All Baja are junk, its a miracle they even float.
2.They are mass produced cookie cutter boats,I can't believe there not imported from a factory in China
3.They are definately Sissy boats,as soon as I climb in mine I get a urge to put on a wig and lip stick.:p
4. Any Baja owner with any sense would never take his boat further from shore than what he's capable of swimming because at any moment the hulls probably going to fall apart and sink because of the subpar construction.
5. If I had any sense of what a "good" boat was I'd tow my Baja out back and let a family of cats breed in it:D

This also has to do with step hulls you might as well tell the truth about them!

1- They are very dangerous
2- the boat will handle like crap
3- You will roll the boat unless you drive in a straight line
4- It takes no less than 10+ years experience before you can drive one

Sounds like you should buy a different make of boat if you don’t like Baja’s so much. Or maybe you’re just a little retarded!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In case you didn't figure it out I too own a Baja and am poking fun at some of the stuff the bashers come up with, some of them don't even own boats. Do you really think I'd wear a wig on my boat,it would get sucked into my supercharger at 90 mph and that wouldn't be pretty,Smitty:evilb:

Im sorry. That was alot of bashing in one thread. I didn't even think after I read it, I just replied. Your boat sounds AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

cuda 05-25-2007 07:02 AM

I think a lot of people bash Baja's because they think that it makes them seem "in the know".

StillHaulin@63 05-25-2007 11:28 AM

Cuda .... your quite right!
But my question is, IN THE KNOW of what?

God forbid a Baja owner should mention his favorite car, a favorite food, or even a TV show he enjoys.
I'm quite sure it would be criticized as being out-of-the-know,
especially if it became known that his favorite boat was a Baja.

People definitely give Baja an undeserved hard time.Baja sells alot of boats and every Baja owner I talk to loves their boat. Some people just have to rain on everyone elses parade to enjoy their own life. Believe it or not their are boat snobs just like their are wine snobs and beer snobs, etc. People give me a hard time for drinking cheap beer, but i bet you I can get just as drunk as the next guy. So what if I have to **** all day the next day, maybe I like sitting on the toilet:D :evilb:

When I bought my first boat last year (after many years on friends boats), I wanted to start out with something nice but small to get the hang of ownership. I had just got back from getting it and was telling two friends about how amazingly clean it was for a well used boat. One of the guys has a 27ft baja and the other has a monster boat he can't afford to put fuel into (I won't get more descritive than that since many of you probably know him). Guy with the big boat says "Oh, you bought a production boat??" After he walked away the guy with the Baja said: "what an Ass!" Funny thing is, his bad ass boat is in for repair more than it's out on the water, and several times I've passed him on the way to somewhere because he's under the hatch trying to get it running again!

Boat snobs indeed!!

PS. Coming from 17 years in the auto industry, I wish someone could explain what makes a boat "production". To me, any vehicle that's built mainly by hand is not production. heck, I love my "Production" vette. Sure wouldn't want to try building one from scratch!

Downtown42 05-26-2007 01:29 PM

Peterbilt trucks switched to line-production in 1987 with a new model 379 replacing the hand built 359 tractor.

The warranty claims dropped 70%

This is what was stated by the factory management, some people with 30+ yrs.
