Motor/boat cursed?

Ok, heres my latest adventure.

Fresh heads on a 383 stroker shortblock with about 10 previous hours. New Stef's oil pan w/windage screen & scraper, pump and pickup, installed per directions.

My motor gets stuck in the same spot no matter what direction I rotate it. Ran fine for about 20 minutes on the earmuffs, and about 5-10 live test. My buddy ran through all revs a few times while I rode with the motor. My turn to drive, all is good, was idling, went to take off, it died and here I am. Zero signs of trouble before failure. I was riding in the engine compartment immediately before it occurred. Occurred the second I touched the throttle.

No water on plugs or in manifold runners. All valves look good, drive removed, all accessories removed, distributor removed (new oil pump was at one time a suspect), starter removed, plugs removed. Turns fine with no noises or resistance until "clunk" and stoppage.

Won't likely know more for a week. Going to LOTO now without boat  for weekend. Most likely won't pull until back.

I expect to see broken cam, messed up timing chain, loose rod bolt. Hoping for something stupid like junk in bellhousing.

Sorry to hear of the problems. It sounds like you've ruled out most easy fix things. Sadly the only way to find out more is going to entail pulling the motor and tearing down. Hopefully what happended did not take out alot of other parts.

I know how it feels! I've lost two motors early on in their lives. When the KB hypercrap pistons came out I had one come apart with 11 hours on the engine. Ringland came apart and took out the whole top of the piston. Did a heckuva job on my new AFR heads. KB warrantied the piston but not my heads.

The 2nd motor was a badboy AFR headed solid lifter that was all forged. The darn .010" under forged GM crank cracked in half at 117 hours. Luckily it stayed in place and only took out the bearings.

I know it's a PIA! Hang in there!

A buddy of mine broke a cam last year, What kind of cam are you running???

jmherbert 05-22-2007 08:41 PM

Crane 284H, hydraulic flat tappet. I can't remember the springs, but they were one step stronger than what was recommended by the cam card. The head builder recommended this since it was a marine application. I think they were a roller lifter rated spring.

Also running 1.6 rockers (Comp full roller stainless)

My friends cam was a Crane, not sure which one, Crane had some bad cams get out, I believe the heat treating process was screwed up. Do a search here on OSO, you might be able to find out some more info.

Thanks,

At this point I'd be tickled pink if it was just a cam.

Got my eye on this cam;

Is that a hyd roller Voodoo grind? I like the specs.
Keep us updated.

Yes. I actually want the 60112 (its bigger:D ) See my new cam? post below

Might need new valve springs, I can't remember what they set the lift to.

Pull the dist. cap off and have someone crank the engine over to see if the rotor turns. My friends cam broke back by the dist. gear.
