Troubleshooting Merc 25hp ignition

If someone here knows how to troubleshoot an ignition problem on a 1989 25hp Merc o/b please PM me.

What sort of ignition problem? No spark? What year is the engine? tiller or remote? If it's no spark I'd try dissconnecting the kill switch first. Should be a black wire with a yellow tracer.
