oil filter blew the gasket out
Ok so I took the boat out to check my fuel pressure I got on plain when I got to 4,000 rpm I smeld oil I looked back and it was all over the gasket on the top of the filter blew out.It is a Fram racing filter on a Dan olson cooler. What do you guys think? Is there a better filter with not so thick gasket. Thanks

Um...people still use Fram filters?
|
Raymo,
What type of oil pressure do you have ? As much as people dont like Fram filters, I have never seen a problem with the Fram Racing ones, only with the cheap stock ones used in high oil pressure situations or with blocked bypass valves. Wix also makes a nice performance filter if you want to try a different brand. Make sure there is not two gaskets on the filter, a lot of times the gasket from the old filter will stick to the housing when you remove it and if you put the new filter on with both gaskets, they will almost always leak or blow out. What is the best filter to use? so I will not have to clean up oil again it made a mess
|
Bill, The fram racing filter has a thick gasket and my oil pressure is 60 pounds wot and 20-30 at idel

Ray,
If your oil pressure is not excessive, and the mounting surface on the cooler is ok, really any good filter should work ok without blowing the gasket out. I have been using the Wix racing filters lately due to availability, but have used plenty of the Fram Racing ones too and have never had a problem. The Wix and the Fram both seem to have about the same thickness gasket as all of the rest. Is this a new setup ? Is it possible there is a restriction of some type in the oil cooler lines ? |

I personally would never use a fram. I have seen them come apart and break engines.
Purolator makes the best inexpensive filters from what I know. |
It was tight. Iam wondering if the dan olson cooler may take a diffrent filter because the rubber gasket on the filter is right on the edge of the housing.
