Steering on an Outlaw....
I am putting full hydraulic steering on my 24' Outlaw with a projected 650HP....What I need to know is will a single ext. ram be enough for that much power and if so can I add another ram to the same system later on when funds are available?

If you're gonna do it, go with dual ram.
My next piece of advice is my opinion only. I would put the boat back to basically stock condition. With all that you are doing, you are going to have 50k into a 25k boat.

besides...................
what fun is "stock condition", i think everyone on this board is putting more money into their boat than what its really worth.
some of us just cannot afford more boat to start with!!
i will be doing the same thing CAPT, which steering are you going with?

Well put b70...I also see Griffs point of just getting a newer boat but like you said some of us need to start off with a lower price range and work up to that $50 -$ 75k range. My Baja took the full wrath of 130 mph winds and 25' storm surge of Katrina and she's still sea worthy. So I guess it has sentimental value due to the fact that it is all I have left from the pre Katrina days. When she is done I should have about $35k into her total...that's cost of the boat when I bought it in 2004 plus all the upgrades I am doing now. For $35k I couldn't even get close to a 650 hp boat if I bought something newer. She will be a beast in the end and I will enjoy every penny I put into her. Thanks guys..........

I have a single ram full system. I don't have tthe power you are talking but my boat does run in the upper 70's. I air it out BIG-TIME too. My steering is solid and precise.
If I was buying a new system I would go dual ram.

Go with dual. My baja had no hydro steering and it would require constant corrections if things got rough. Ive never felt single ram steering. My fountain has dual hydrolic and there is no feedback....rock solid. Love it.

From a pure steering perspective one ram is enough. The improved leverage having the ram operate directly on the drive instead of the tiller arm is enormous. I think the idea behind the dual rams are more for having a symmetrical distribution of the forces on the gimbal. I would imagine that is needed if you are racing.
