carb issue
 

Had the boat out this weekend and for the most part it ran great. Although it is somewhat rich. 454/420's with holley 800's. I have 22p Hydromotive four blades. WOT, I am getting 4900 port, 4600 starboard. The starboard engine seemed to load up a few times, and die when I put it in gear. When it would load up, it would seem to chug a little off idle for a minute. I am going to get some fresh plugs and wires, and try to lean out the idle a bit. Transom was sooty after about 2 hours of run time.

My question is, when a plug fouls at idle, will it "clear" itself up once it gets up in RPM, or is it possible I am on 7 cylinders causing my 300 RPM difference? Engines run in synch from about 2000-4000, then after 4000, the starboard gets passed by the port in rpm.

My advice would be fresh plugs, caps and rotors every season....wires, every 2-3.
I remember that one way back, It still looks and sounds good.

Yeah, Im gonna run a compression test for the hell of it, and slap some new plugs and wires in it. The distributors were new last season.

So you saw the old hawk yesterday? She ran good for the first time out this season. It has some miles on it, but still a great old boat. I GPS'ed it for the first time this weekend, and with the engines 300RPM different, was running 56mph in the flat water. Hoping to get them at 5000 in synch, and maybe some chop and see 60! LOL Thats a sweet ride you got there, it was cool with all the Fountains there.

Check the power valves in the Holley.

Check your fuel pressure. Sometimes the fuel pump will start to build to much pressure and cause the needle and seats to fail. That will cause a black transom. I would not rejet until you check that. Also check your float levels if they are to high it will cause the motor to load up.

Make sure your drives are trimming equally. What are the jets in it now?

That's what I miss about Chicago! Besides the great people, fresh water and Lake Michigan, I miss the excitment of the first day out for the summer season.

i'd try a gasket set in the carb first, storeing our boats as many months per year as we do up here they dry out and get hard and crack after a few years, that makes the engine run just as your saying. i'm for every changeing them for my friends with ski boats cuz thier fat on low end and lose 300rpm on top!!

I believe I have 76P and 91S 6.5 PV no PV in the rear. Ran fine with those jets last year. Im thinking the float needs adjustment and maybe clean air bleeds out??
