the cables are wound backwards on the drives under the dash

Steering mechanisms don't just reverse themselves. Obviously at some point the steering was installed wrong and someone did not take the time to correct the problem.
You will probably need to assess your situation at the steering box and where the cable connects to the outdrive/outboard. If your steering looks something like the following you can swap the arm to the other side. http://www.teleflexmarine.com/librar...a-jetboat2.jpg If your steering looks like the following, you may be able to swap the cable so it feeds into the top instead of the bottom, or simply the oppositte of what you have: http://www.teleflexmarine.com/librar...safe-tqc-3.jpg Unfortunately, The fact that its wrong now(it wasn't fixed) probably says that there is some reason why this can't be done. But you should get a good look at your steering mechanism and go from there. The other option would be to route the cable to the drive from the other side of the boat, if it allows for it. |

Probably has ride guide rack, and was installed upside down.
If so, take out center bolt, and unbolt the rack from the helm pull out the pinion by hand and flip the rack , it bolts on from either side so that it can be installed on either side of a boat. This is an easy 5 minute fix. BBB |
Thanks for the help !!!! I'll check it out this weekend.

Sorry guys I did not read all the posts so I may be a bit redundant!!! If it is Teleflex steering the cable must be fed into the bottom hole at the helm the top hole is for the plastic end cover tube.
