1999 454 mag mpi fuel pump
 

I am looking for a friend,

the motor only runs intermittently, when the engine quits there is no fuel pump sound, so it seems like it would be pump or relay (if there is one).

I don't know the MPI motors, so any help would be appreciated.

My question is, is there a separate relay for the fuel pump, also is there a way to buy the pump without the cooler.

It rained all day yesterday and I didn't get to check for power at the pump

The fuel pump should stop within a few seconds when the engine stops even with the ignition on.
To check if you have a fuel pressure problem, check fuel pressure at the plenum(with the vacuum hose to the fuel pressure regulator disconnected), with the engine running, in the situation when the engine stumbles. It should be rock steady. If it is not it could be a number of things apart from the fuel pump.

i need to check and see if power comes on at the pump for a couple of seconds when key is cycled. The motor either runs ok or quits like it is out of fuel.

you can hot wire the pump easy enough.... just unplug it and run a hot wire and ground to the two terminals using insulated alligator clips... that should tell you what you need to know. when i got my motors they had been sitting for about a year and the pumps wouldn't run... i took them out of the cooler assy and hot wired them and tapped them and they would start and stall... so i filled them w/ wd 40 and did the same and they ran more and more until they would run continously... then i just ran them continously fopr a few mins pumping just wd 40 and they cleaned right up and have run fine since which is about 50 hrs. or so... they have absolutely no torque at all and anything at all will stall them. i have saved others any number of times just by blowing hi press air thru them and pushing some tiny speck of grit out of the rollers which had them jammed .

It may well be contamination, happened for the first time after he changed the fuel filter. If I can get down there we will try taking it out and testing it.
