power steering pump
I had a hydraulic hose rupture on my power steering at 80+ .(full hydraulic) I limped it back to the dock with little steering. In the process I burned up my power steering pump. The engine is a 1999, 502 with stock merc power steering pump. Can I get a new pump at a local parts store or do I need to go through Merc. and pay the big $. It has the serpentine belt set up. I havent removed pump yet, but how do I get the serpentine pulley off the front of the pump? Where would you recomend I go for a new pump?
Thanks, Steve |
Try a junkyard. You may need to press the pulley off with special tools that autozone will lend you for free.
It's just a generic Metric vane pump. Get one from a truck and maybe it will just bolt up and go with the serpentine pulley and all. Dealer sells them for apx. $400. Save $350 and get a used one . They dont go bad in a million miles unless something like what happened to you happens. You might have to change the bolts etc. but it is the same part BBB |
Or you could just take the pump body out of the reservoir and exchange at any auto parts store.

I took the old pump off and headed to the local Auto Zone. Matched it up (Auto Zone Part #7087) Put it back on and it's running great. Life time warranty. Only cost $58.00 which is a lot better that the Merc price.
Thanks everyone for the advice. Steve |
