boat running slower in heat and humidity

two boats one 2004 42 fountain top speed normally is 84 with 525 with the heat and humidity flat water the boat ran 75 at 5100 rpm. the second boat 35 ex with 496's normally 78 to 80
same conditions the boat ran 72 mph.whats up with that?

gsmith9898 06-28-2007 06:58 AM

I prop down in heat of summer.

KNOT-RIGHT 06-28-2007 07:22 AM

high heat high humidity = less air
Cold air less humidity = more air denser

Now if a engine is a airpump what scenario will produce more power?

if I set my Idle at these temps. When the cool air comes back
it dont idle for SH@T.

Modern EFI with proper sensors will adjust the boost or
Mixture or both to compensate.

Rule Of Thumb. If It's Hard For You To Breath It's Hard For The Engine To Breath.

are we the only ones with this issue or are there more out there.

Rebel_Heart 06-28-2007 10:18 AM

That seems like quite a bit of speed loss unless it was really humid. I usually only see a few mphs. How many rpms did you lose?

Reckless32 06-28-2007 11:07 AM

Yep hot moist air is less dense therefore less oxygen.

Colder air is more dense with more oxygen. Airplanes fly much better in cold air than in humid air as well. Your top end max will come in the early spring, and late fall timeframe.

I was thinking his first boat mentioned was excessive.
However up here in Mass. last few days have been 106 temp
with 98% humidity.

Kind of like standing in a glass of warm water:D

Means your on earth like all of us.

GLH 06-28-2007 11:24 AM

Air... Humidity... as they mentioned above.

Also the water is more than likely warmer making the mills run hotter and less efficient

CigDaze 06-28-2007 11:32 AM

It's normal. Sucks, but it's normal.

sleeper_dave 06-28-2007 11:36 AM

"physics" is what's up with that

Turbojack 06-28-2007 12:34 PM

Boat is propped for the cool weather. When the temp & humidity go up the same prop will make a big difference since you are now down on H.P. & will be down on speed since now the prop is too big for the HP killing even more speed. If you were to prop down to get max rpm, you will gain some of the speed that you lost. You gave the RPM of the engine with the slower speed, what was RPM on the faster runs?

sonic28 06-28-2007 01:15 PM

rpm 5100

Something does not compute. If you ran 84 @ 5100 rpm & you ran 75 @ 5100 rpm either you have messed up a prop, boat has gained a lot more weight, tach is wrong, or ??? Same prop, same boat, same weight the RPM's should be down on the 75 mph run compared to the 84 mph run.

I'm down about the same #'s you say.

I put most of the blame on humidity.

One thing I like about the fall.......those #'s will come back:D

I pulley down in the heat of summer.
Meaning, I add boost to compensate...:drink:

does this condition show up more on carbs than efi.i have seemed to loose some top end on my 454 mag carb but my buddies efi seems to run the same.

Exactly MM. When we were drag racing (cars) in super stock, carbs had to be rejetted not only daily but possibly multiple times in one day to keep up with the changing weather. You must have a weather station at your trailer now or your pizzing in the wind. If we were running a race that went from daytime heat on into the night and the heat and humdity dropped significantly, we had better fatten the old girl up a bit or....

I thought the speed losses listed above seemed a little excessive but, depends on what the weather was when the baseline runs were taken. Might have been the 180 degree opposite extreme (60 degrees and 25% humidity).
