If you have recently pulled the lower unit for a water pump replacement, check the shift linkage. There is a little tang that should be pointing forward. If this was off when you re-installed it, it will lock up on you. also could be coming from the washer that fits on the shift linkage from the lower unit.
This is coming from an alpha one guy! |
Might also try this ... pull the back cap off of the out drive, and check/clean/grease the spring loaded ball/detent mechanism. It can get packed with crap, and hang up.

1. Unhook the shift cable from the engine to the outdrive
Can you shift into f, n, and r? 2. My next step would be thourally checking out the condition of the shift cable. 3. I would then pull the back cap and also checking the gearlube Jr. |
It is most likely the thrust washer/bearing in your outdrive...not a hard fix but the outdrive must be removed and taken apart...about an hour for a mechanic to fix..$40 worth of parts...check this diagram out..number 25 is your problem..

If you pull that rear cover off also check the shift yoke (part #9) seen that break once and do the same thing as you describe....most times it stuck in one gear though....

I had the same problem, shift cable ($70) was the culprit.

Man, sometimes a plan really comes together!...glad you got her goin! now go have some fun!

been watching this thread.
I have hard shifting, (almost impossible now, feels like somethings gonna break to get it done) on the starboard side. Identically as difficult a shift forward or reverse. No noises or vibes. Gotten much worse in the last couple weeks. 220 hour boat... new problem this season, 17 hours. money here is on the ball/detent mechanism? |
Sounds like your bottom shift cable has gotton some wear in it..( the cable that goes through your transom to your outdrive) they get burned or kinked sometimes with all the different mechanisms in that area...it is a real bear to change unless you have a special cable tool to use..but it can be done...other than that it could be low fluid, or fluid that is contaminated with water....1st thing I would do is see if that lower cable is noticably worn...then pull the outdrive and see if that tight feeling is still in the shifter....it is not necessary to pull the drive to replace that cable, but you will need the boat out of the water...
