1981 TRS Gimble Bearing Replacement
 

What should I expect to pay to have the gimble bearings replaced in my TRS Gimble Housing. There is play in the drive as a result. What is all involved in this repair?

The gimbal bearing will not cause play in the drive. The pivot bearings might and this is a b!tch of a job. In many cases the gimbal is wallowed out where the brg rides and will need to be replaced. If just the bearings can be done it can be done with the gimbal on the boat (there is a kit to drill and plug the gimbal after the job). But the job is likely to cost 5-6 hours a side if they can do it.

The bearing is in the tailstock of the transmissions . Not like alpha or Bravo.

Right on BBB, if it is a Merctrans the engine needs to come out, if a velvet drive you can do it in the boat, but you need a LONG snap ring pliers.

cost me about $2700.00 to have the gimble done on a bravo one . hope that helps .

Boat has a Borg Werner trans. The play is up and down i nthe drive.

What about side to side play? What needs done to fix that?? Not trying to steal your thread just have that problem my self

I did my gimble 3 months ago on a 1976 TRS. It was an easy job. Parts cost $400 and about 3 hours of time. I never did one of these before, but can tell you how I did it.

1) Removed the 6 outdrive bolts and took off the drive.
2) took out the 2 motor mounts and suspended the engine.
3) slid the engine forward and removed the tail stock which holds the gimble
4) pulled the gimble out, put new in
5) bolted on tail stock
6)pushed engine back in place.
7)aligned the outdrive
8)bolted drive back on with new gasket.

few things. Make sure the gimble greese fitting is in the same place. Also make sure the metal washer is placed at the end of the spring on the outdrive shaft going into the tranny so the spring does not wear out the rear tranny seal.

O, I replaced the bellows and any other maintance item when I was in there that is why it cost $400 for the gimble, bellows, and merc trs gasket kit which includes every gasket you can purchase.

good info Jon. You didn;t replace the whole gimble rings you just replaced the bearings correct?

The gimbal bearing that Jon replaced will not fix play in the drive. If it moves up and down it has worn PIVOT bearings http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...GIMBAL+HOUSING(#4). If it moves side to side it has a loose, usually worn steering arm and/or upper pivot pin.http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show_...STEERING+LEVER (#12 and 16)
