Hit Rocks,tore Drive Off,checking Coupler
well had a problem with a rock pile this weekend.broke the drive off the back of the boat.insurance guy came out and looked at it.is there anyway to see if the coupler is damaged or spun?just don't want any problems 2-3 months down the road

Shine a flashlight in through the gimbal housing and you can clearly see the splines in the coupler.
|
yea but what about the rubber spinning?
|
It will be really hard to tell for sure. If it spun enough to make heat you might see some sign around the edges of the rubber but seems unlikely you will be able to see it while its in the boat. The rubber part is pretty tough. I would think it would take one quick shot.

I would bet it is compromised. Have it replaced on your dime if need be.

Remove the motor and replace the thing, your insurance ought to pick up the cost because it is directly related to the drive damage. Not to mention it is a good idea to yank the motor and check for signs of internal transom damage as well. I've worked with many insurance companies on damage just like yours, it's covered 90% of the time.

279.00 new on Ebay. Change it.

Get the insurance company to let you pull the engine to check the inner transom assembly for damage. You can't see it with the engine in. Been there done that. Both the coupler and the transom assembly had to be replaced because of damage.

I hit a log going about 60 a few years back.
Same as yours; ripped the drive right off the boat. We didn't know it was still there until hulling the boat. The drive was hanging by the stearing pistons. The coupler was fine but the transome assembly was shot. Pull the engine and check everything... |
