Default Remove stainless shims with tie-bar?

Quick question. Do you retain the stainless shims that go between the trim rams and the outdrive when you install a tie bar or do you delete them? I helped a friend pull the drives on his 29' PQ with a tie bar and the shims are still in place. When reinstalling the drives, you have to tighten the nut on the bolt that goes through the rams and drive so tight to get the plastic end caps on that the bar will not move. Another friend's 303 Formula does not have the shims and his tie bar moves freely. I would think you would want that bar to move freely if you ever had to raise one drive and not the other. TIA. Jeff
