vapor lock
What exactly is vapor lock? One of my cars has no started to cut out on me (yesterday and once about 3 weeks ago) and then dies. Then it wouldn't start for about 15 minutes or so. Both times it was about 105 degrees outside and after intown driving for a little while. I was guessing it was either my MAF sensor overheating or the fuel/fuel rails getting too hot. One guy at work said it sounds like it vapor locked on me. Not sure what it is but didn't ask because I know alot about these cars and didn't want to sound dumb!:D Anyways, could someone explain this to me? The car is a 1990 Mustang, 5.0 to a 306, trickflow stage 1 cam, trick flow street heat upper/lower intake, bassani equal length headers, offroad pipes, IMCO mufflers, AFCO aluminum racing radiator, 3;73 gears.... The guage reads around 140-160* but gets real hot in the engine compartment. Thank you.

I have lots of experience with this era Ford EFI (seeing
how I have an EFI 5.0 in my 77 Bronco and a 96 351 in my wifes Jeep). Usually early warning of fuel pump failure. Especially if you have the original pump. Known fact that they suck. Use on of the high flow replacements from Summit Racing. Pesky Varmint |
Thank you, I plan on upgrading to a larger lph volume pump anyways sometime. Guess now is as good as a time as ever.

Hey Varmint i wonder if i could pick your brain for a second.I have a 1990 302 Bronco that has just started to act up . Anyways i bought it off an old man about six years ago that was the original ownwer it only had 50,000 on it but it had been sitting for years in his garage.Like a typical Bronco it had a rusty tank so i installed a new plastic one and a new fuel pump also.
Anyways it just started acting up kinda cutting out and at idle surging i had put a idle position sensor on it years ago that cured that but another new one did not fix it this time.Do you think i need a new fuel pump again? |
Brandon you have any pics of you Century?

http://www.lakewideyachtbrokerage.com/1507.htm There are the pictures on the website where I bought it. I haven't taken any yet, just got it.
And for you Bronco ptoblem, did you set the tps when you put it on? Check and make sure it has between .90 and .95 volts runing to it. Also, check you idle air control. That is the round cylinder mounted to the side of your throttle body held on by 2 small bolts. Unplug it and pull it off then hose the inside out with carb cleaner (do this to both holes). Then blow it out with an air hose. That is usually the problem when you get a surging idle. I actually had to grind an opening between the 2 holes in it about 1/4 inch to allow more air to bypass through mine to compensate for the big cam at idle. But I bet that is the problem, almost always just clean out and doesn't need replaced. Brandon |
