6.2's are 377's. just like 7.4's are 454. The Scorpions made more HP. and cost a LOT more than the 6.2's. Do your friends motors say Scorpion on top or 6.2? I forget when merc stopped putting Scorpions in I/O's, but a 292 with them ran in the low 80's. The 6.2 version which is available now will run low 70's. If you are buying new, they are not Scorpions.

I wonder if you could order with the Merc Reman 383's. That might save you some more money and would be faster and same warrenty.

I think they stopped production of the 377 Scorpion engines in late 2004 may be early 2005. Mine have been manufactured in October 2004 and are some of the last ones according to the serial numbers.

This is a comment from a guy from Mercury Racing when they stopped production:

A stronger performer in the field, the small-block-based 377 Scorpion never performed well in terms of sales. Its chances for success dropped further when MerCruiser, a separate company from Mercury Racing though both are under the Mercury Marine umbrella, introduced the 320-hp MX 6.2 MPI engine two years ago.
"The pure cost of the 377 with all its specialty parts—it just didn't move very well," said Mackie. "With the 6.2, you get similar power and SmartCraft at a lower price.—

Thanks Fast Enough and Phazar454Mag for the info . 377s sure look good but after reading , 6.2 are ok for what were looking for in terms of gas and trailering. Seeing my 90 242ls go, is not easy ,but we [ WIFE] think the 292 fastech is going to be the right size and power for us . Phazar how do you like your 292

I absolutely love it. Handling is great, it looks great and I am really proud of it. I really appreciate the Formula attention to detail and the design.
