Higher Octane Gas?

I normally run 93 octane in my NA 540s. What would increasing the octane do in regard to performance? I always hear for the Shootout that many use octane boost or very high octane fuel. What are the benefits?

The only way you would see an increase with higher octane, is if your motors liked more timing than you can use with 93. Then by using high octane fuel you would be able to bump them up and not get detonation. Without being on a dyno, you would have to do some speed/rpm testing and some very careful plug reading.

if your timing remains the same, then adding higher octane will result in less power. high octain actually burns slower

so like dmoore said. if your engine likes having additional timing advance because of the high octane, only then will you gain any horespower.

EFI motors controlled by computers can see gain, but that is because they advance their timing automatically because they do not sence detonation.

Thanks for the replies. Guess, I'll save my money. 93 octane is still fairly expensive.
