300 Tempest: max RPM on stock engine ???
Hello
re RPM limit of the 300 TEMPEST engine . Ignorant to all the warnings, my engine revs upto 6000rpm (@the built in tacho) and sounds well all the time . Does anybody know the rev limits of the 1986 Mercruiuser 300 TEMPEST ..??? (Its not writen on the valve cover, sorry I read the threads first..) Thanks for a short Info to [email protected] Andreas Liberator 211 limited Steinkirchen Germany |
The tempest is a 4 bolt block, with a forged crank, so 6000 once in a while shouldn't kill it. If I were you, I'd get a prop that bring the rpm's down to 52-5300 @ WOT.

If it's a stock, 20 year old engine I'd be a little worried about the condition of the valvesprings and the valvetrain in general. Valve float could cause lots of damage. I'd keep it in the low 5000's.

i had a pair of 300 tempests in a baja 280 a couple of years ago. Great engines, Max RPM was listed as 5100.

I would check that tach if I were you. Use a digital frequency counter or whatever calibrated instrument you can get hold of.
