Merc Thunderbolt 4 Modules And No Advance.
I am currently running a V-8 500 cube blower motor with a Merc Thunderbolt 4 ignition system and a 14 degree V-6 module. I have three of these modules and only one of them gives any advance at all. The one that does work gives 8 degrees advance only and it does so intermitantly. My understanding is that a 14 degree V-6 module should give 10 degrees on a V-8. My 24 degree V-8 module gives about 22 degrees advance so the system is working with that module.... My question is this. When these modules go out, do they give intermittant or less advance than they should? Does anyone have a WORKING V-6 14 degree module to part with? Thanks.

ghittner, I have used v-6 modules on v-8 and don't recall a change in advance from14 to 10. Are you setting your initial at a low rpm like 750. Also back when there were bulletins saying not to use advance timing lights with that ign. Don't know if thats your problem, just figured I'd share a thought.

When installed on a V-8, the V-14 only provides about 8-10 deg of advance. Also, the V6-14 starts advancing at 650 rpm, so if you're checking base timing at a rather high idle, a lot of the advance is already out.
I've been running them for years on my blower motors. I set total timing at 28 deg. and initial falls in around 20 or so. Kurt |
Thanks I bet thats it! so when I'm checking these at 1300 or so, where I idle in neutral they are already in the advance curve.... At what RPM are the V6 14 Deg modules all in on a V8?

That said I know it was originally on my customers engine because originally it had some mild work done to a 454. It did run better than the stock 454 module on that engine than the stock one... I hope this helps.. :) Feel free to call me if you would like.. :) Jamie / Lakeside 570-639-2628 . |
Thanks guys, the module advances 10 degrees but you need to get it down to about 700 to see any beginning of advance. That said, the advance is all in at about 2100 RPM.
