Identifing an HP500

A guy has a 1991 boat for sale ......says it has HP500s in it (carb) sounds fishy to me......but how can you tell?.......the numbers on the block?......oh yeah, and what year did they come out??

Bajapred 09-16-2007 12:14 PM

Back in 1991 they were either HP465 Gen IV or Gen V..they both the 465's and the 500's in 1994..but for sure the 500 is no older than 1994..their first full year was 1995....to tell wether it is a 500 or not is very simple..they were all painted mercury racing blue..and the valve covers say mercury hi-performance racing on them..the old 465 version was black in color but the flame arrestor said HP465 on them

Bajapred 09-16-2007 12:18 PM

I did forget to mention though, the 500 bulldog was built around 1990...basically the same engine as the HP500 only it was 540CI...

Griff 09-16-2007 12:40 PM

The regular HP500/502ci came out in 1994. The 500/540ci were made from 1990 until about 1998.
All the blocks and heads are painted BLACK. The intakes, carbs, valve covers, pulleys, and other misc stuff is painted blue. True HP500/502ci are Gen V or VI blocks.

Is he saying that these are original engines????

pullmytrigger 09-16-2007 08:36 PM

the motors are not the traditional HP500 colour scheme.....thats the problem

The HP 465 came with a hydraulic flat tappet ....to convert it to A HP 500, all you have to do is install a roller cam and switch to single plane intake...been there done that !

Bajapred 09-17-2007 02:28 PM

They had flat tappet..actually all the HP engines did up through 1998..then the Gen + series HP500 that came out in 1999 went to roller lifters, and the 500EFI was the same roller lifter setup from then on. Get a serial number off the engine, that may be the only way to know for sure what you have..other than some disassembly of the engine..some pictures might help!

PatriYacht 09-17-2007 02:46 PM

Actually, all of the HP450 and HP500 had roller lifters from their start in 1994. The Bulldog 500 started in 1990 and there was a Bulldog 575 starting in 1986. If you can get a serial number, go to www.go-fast.com and use their parts look up feature to find your engine.

Bajapred 09-17-2007 06:09 PM

Well, don't take this to the bank, but...Gen IV & V had flat tap & Gen VI had roller lifters...for the most part..but not always.

Pwrbt33 09-17-2007 06:54 PM

Also look on the side of the engine block for the casting size in it. It will say 8.2 if its a 502 and 7.4 if its a 454.

cuda 09-18-2007 03:33 AM

I have a 1997 HP 500 that has a roller cam.

Gen 5 HP500's used Crane hyd. roller lifters with link bars between pairs. They're still listed in the Merc parts catalog for about 1700.00 a set. And about 1000.00 for the cam.

pullmytrigger 09-21-2007 10:23 AM

apparently on the block it says "hi perf pass"
the serieal number is 6269315
it has 10051107 cast into the block

pullmytrigger 09-21-2007 10:30 AM

both numbers said "part number not found".......I think I did it right.

DMOORE 09-21-2007 12:09 PM

OK, I went to stem to sterns web site, and looked up the serial number. First off, all of the Merc racing serial numbers started with 2 letters, then the numbers. The 6269315 comes up as a 370 TRS. meaning it's a 454. Hope it helps.

I went on www.mortec.com (cool site) with the 10051107 number came up as a 454 4 bolt mark 4 bowtie block.

pullmytrigger 09-21-2007 02:56 PM

the guy called me back said he found the Merc mod number on the engine its D515839......comes up not found on the Bam site.....

MOBILEMERCMAN 09-21-2007 03:32 PM

465 '90-'92 numbers are oc849992-of213244. 500's start at of213293 . My guess hes got 465. His # must start with OD not D

PatriYacht 09-21-2007 04:39 PM

The 500 bulldog also fits those numbers. OC577253-OF745405

I sincerely appriciate all the help......here is a pic of the engines.....the boat is a 91 32 Active Thunder

DMOORE 09-21-2007 06:33 PM

Check Stem to Stern. The new numbers say it is a 88-92 454 MAG with a bravo.

I was checking 500 bulldog page. If they were bulldog 500 /540 they would have different oil remotes and different engine harness location and came with gil exhaust. Seems more likely they started as 465. Good luck. If they were stroker motors he would probably be telling you that. My 2 cents
