496HO v. 525

Is the 525 a drop-in replacement for the 496 or are mods. required? ALso, can you run Corsa Q and Q with the 525? Thanks in advance for the replies.

bouncedcheque 09-21-2007 06:04 PM

anyone? Must be lots who have done this?

zt260 09-21-2007 08:15 PM

You have to be kiding. Your not replacing the engine again? The 496 and 525 have different transom exhaust exits. You kill me...

Pat McPherson 09-21-2007 08:27 PM

No Corsa captains call either.
You'll need the CMI stuff to match the headers on a 525EFI.

bouncedcheque 09-23-2007 06:59 PM

Dave, if you don't take me seriously, how will I ever convince my wife!! BTW, I could upgrade my engine every two years til 2015 and still have spent less than you have on the one engine and drive(s)...

Sounds right to me. Give them a call, ask for Kurk, tell him you're and OSOer.

Now That's Cold....

Like I always say, "Go big or go home!"
How about a 1075??? Hook a Bravo up and your all set. :drink:

But I say it with envy in my voice...

Let’s just cut to the chase-
I've got a spare 750HP whipple blown 502 with silent choice that I'll sell you cheap. That should make it a wild ride.

You know you’ll want to go faster. :D

bouncedcheque 09-30-2007 07:01 PM

You've got "spare" 750 hp blown motors lying around like I've got spare paper-clips... I forget now what you had that engine in before the 260 - a Persuader? Did you upgrade the drive? How much additional clearance was required with the whipple? I shouldn't be going here...

zt260 09-30-2007 08:36 PM

This was the original engine in the ZT260. It only did 92mph. One season 70 hrs. It all fit under the hatch for me. You might need to raise the hatch slightly. I ran a standard XR drive with it. It all depends on the throttle control.

I can send some pictures if you want to see it. I loved the silent choice setup, what a sleeper.

Dave: PM sent.

bouncedcheque 01-03-2008 07:35 AM

Actually, not. No PM ability on your profile? Can't find any previous e-mails to you since an inept computer tech. lost my entire harddrive by cleaning it without first backing it up. Damn computer guys...

Wild Card 09 01-03-2008 08:08 AM

I swapped my 496 for a new 525 170 hours ago. BIG IMPROVEMENT!
There are issues with the harness if you fit a 2006 1/2 or later motor (as I did). Well worth it!

bouncedcheque 01-03-2008 09:53 AM

how far off are the exhaust holes? Did you get custom transitions, or did/can you use the rubber? Thanks.

I'll email you. I didn't use much on OSO that I needed to pay for so I'm just registered now. (No PM's)

As a computer guy, you're responsible for you own backups, but he should have asked if you had data. Keep that data backed up at all times or you will be screwed sooner are later. Sorry it was sooner.:(

I'm starting to think this swap is not worth the hassle.

Take your 496 put a raylar kit and and exhaust on it and your at 560hp.

Probably have a little less money in the deal at the end unless you can buy a 525 for 16k and sell your 496 for 10k.

Reliablity would probably go to the Raylar 496 and you could run silent choice with no headaches.

You have to really like the bling on that 525 ...IMHO

Actually that "bling" goes real deep on a 525 - right the way down to the pistons, rods, crank....

flying J 01-07-2008 02:44 AM

Agreed, the 525 has a better rotating assy.

However, does everything need to be forged on a N/A motor under 600 hp. Thats the real debate!

Don't get me wrong I would love to have a blue motor because the good internals and blue paint never hurt anyone. But the best bang for your buck will always be the bottom line
