Gen VI 454 to Dart BIG M Comparison
I am considering replacing my Gen VI 454 with a Dart Big M block. What are the external differences between these platforms? The Dart is supposedly comparable to a Gen IV motor. All of the accessory brackets, engine mounts, timing cover, and other threaded holes are located in the same place as the Gen IV. Also, the Dart does not have provisions for a knock sensor like the Gen VI and uses a two piece rear main. I am wondering what surprises may be lurking in the darkness...
I have been putting together a parts list and would like to nail down what items will not be interchangeable. Does anyone have experience with this swap?
Thanks in advance for any info you may have!

The timing cover and the oil pan is different. The Dart also uses a different camshaft and lifters. The oil adapter on the block is different. Gen VI heads will not work on a Dart, Merlin or Gen IV. You can just screw the knock sensor into the 1/4 NPT hole that is the drain on the bottom of the block. I use it all the time and it works just fine. The water has no effect on the performance of the knock sensor. All of your accessories will bolt up in the same location with the same bolts. Hope this helps, Eddie.
