496 Mag to 496HO
It's my understanding that the only difference between a 496 Mag and 496 HO(2006) is the cam and the ECU. Is that true? I think the cam is about $450-$475 however I'm unsure of the cost of a reflash. Also I believe that the Mag and HO have different lower units. If the cam was changed and the ECU reflashed would the Bravo 1 be strong enough for the additional 100 hp? Has anyone done this and what were the results. It seems that this is a relatively inexpensive 100hp upgrade. Any ideas or thoughts.
Thanks, Jay |
No one has any information about this?????????????????

I have a Ho camshaft for a 100 bucks if you need one it only has 30 hrs on it. I run a bravo with 485hp and have had no issues.

Do you have 2? I've got twins. How about the ECU's?

Cam, ECU, and throttle body. I think they pair the bravo X with all new HO's. I wouldnt worry about any bravo behind either drive. If you are going to bomb the engine down the road you might as well just get the mag and save.....almost every aftermarket 496 stuff includes its own cam, throttle body, and ecu flash for either an NA motor like raylar or a whipple.

do a search for username "goodfella" his name is Mike Wood used to work at doller he has a kit, pretty reasonable the expensive part is the labor.

Merc Mag to HO is 50HP, 375 vs. 425.
GM powertrain shows 390 vs. 420 Cam and ECU are the differences. Call Raylar, they have a cam and ECU upgrade. Stock Bravo should be fine. |
Thanks for the information. Sent a PM to goodfella and talked to Raylar. They do not sell just the cam and ECU. You have to buy the whole kit. I thought that the cam could be changed by taking the back seat out without pulling the motors but it doesn't look like it. Your right about the labor cost:D
Thanks, Jay |
The parts list shows different part # for the 375 and 425 hp throttle bodies. I haven't looked into any details but this could mean either 'nothing' (i.e minor design changes) or a differently sized butterfly ...

Interesting dyno specs on the GM web site. These numbers are very close to what I actually dyno'd the 2 Merc engines at. I actually found 24 HP difference at the prop. The mag made 363 and the HO made 387. Could the claimed 50 HP difference me marketing hype from Merc??
