#6 Drives....need advice
I went out and ran my boat yesterday. After last weekend, I had just a little bit of drive fluid in my bilge. I cleaned it up real good and went out yesterday to find out for certain where it was coming from. It's coming in through the transom assembly, right at the donut from the transmission. There was maybe 4-5 ounces that came through into the bilge, but that whole cavity has to be full of fluid for it to come through there (I would think). Obviously, the upper seal is where it's leaking.:(:( I called Mercury Racing to get a referral and they told me that are no Mercury #6 techs in Maryland. I hear that it requires special tools for the #6's. There was definately no water in the fluid, still dark green....but I certainly am not going to run it and take a chance at blowing it up!! I've blown up enough chit this year!
How much of a job is it to replace the upper seal? |
Give Brian Jackson a call @ Offshore outdrives ... he knows them very well

What about John Pwrbt33? I think he knows number sixes.

It could be the rear seal for the tailstock. Replaced mine; the drive must be pulled for access, but this seal is in the gimble housing.

HHmmmm, thats strange. I got a certificate and everything after I completed that class for Dry Sump Six Drives down in Atlanta.
Oh well. Offshore Performance in Grasonville can help you out. They have all the tools to do repairs. Maybe give Alan or Art a call also. I know Alan deals with a lot of sixes. |

Alan at Art Lilleys in Arnold. There number is 410-384-1666. I know they rig and service a lot of race boats but I'm not sure if he does work on the drives themselves.

Thanks Steve. I spoke with Craig Colabella yesterday, I think that a quickie Florida trip is in the cards. He said that I could wait for it!
I need to get the boat on the trailer and pull the drive first to make sure what the problem is. No sense in half-azzing it, the consequences are too great!!!!!!! |
