Magneto Distributor
I am thinking about changing my old points distributor to a Magneto. I was talking to someone and they were talking about them. I do not know much about them. Or should I just get a MSD. If I went the the mag are the tach's the same? I am also looking for good things and bad things about the mag's

No block-mounted starter would spin the engine fast enough to get the mag to fire the plugs.
If magnetos had any advantages, you'd see them in use in places other than outboards and funny cars. Go with all MSD and it will do everything you want. |
The old automotive mags had a spring loaded "hold back" that allowed them to snap quckly past the distributor cap post that was being fired. This allowed for higher speed in the mag when cranking. It was cntrifugally inactivated when the engine got to speed.
But as you pointed out, there are really no advantages on any motor that can run an alternator. Oh yeah, and try finding magneto plugs and plug wires at your local auto parts store.
