Tear the mutha down
 

wll started taking apart the carbed 502 in my boat - the one that stopped turning over for no apparent reason.

No water in cyls, no rust on plugs, nothing binding up (took off everything from trans to powersteering and fuel pump...still no turn.

So took of Gills and valve covers...valves look normal, no floating parts or anything - still wont turn.

So How do I pull intake and heads?
Intake bolts are off but it seems stuck on - can I hammer it or what?

A little tap won't hurt but a chunk of wood makes a good drift for belting the bloody things loose.

Make sure you have ALL the bolts out of the intake and heads. I presume you've already removed the distributor. There are 12 bolts on the intake, and 16 in each head. There is one inside the valve cover part of the head, that is down in the lower rear of the head that is usually covered with oil, and easy to miss. The intake should come right off, sometimes a tap with a rubber mallet will be required. Same thing with the heads. Sometimes the heads will require a little more persuasion to break loose. I have had to put a wood chisel between the head and the block in a place away from the cylinders to break it loose.
Also, drain any coolant in the block, otherwise it may fill a couple cylinders when you pull the head.

did you take the starter off. this is to be sure its not engauged and locked up?

He swapped them from engine to engine recently.

Tap a sturdy knife blade gradually between the intake manifold and heads. Once you get the intake off, the heads will pry off fairly easily working from the center of the engine out.
