Rebuilding A Tired VP Engine
I have a 7.4 GSI Volvo in my boat with about 150 hours on it and was wondering about how long it should last. What kind of life should I see out of that motor with Royal Purple oil changes every 20ish hours? When I do have to rebuild the motor what am I looking at cost wise? Is that going to be like a couple grand or like 10 grand to refresh it. When the motor get's like 500 - 1000 hours on it do I need to do a complete rebuild and if so what will that cost approx? Any info would be appreciated!

Many people have ran those motors to 1000 hrs. LOTS of variables. When it does start to drop in performance, it's best to pull ,and do a full rebuild. If the bores are within spec, as many still are at that point, a hone, with new bearings, rings and rebuilt heads won't break the bank.

If nothing is broken and just worn, my guess would be 2000-2500. If you did it yourself and had the machine work done professionally, I would think about 1500 dollars.

I should add, the above is if you were pulling the motor and dropping the motor off at the builders. It goes way up if you just drop the boat off.

Thanks for the info!

Way too many variables to give a good estimate on cost to rebuild. It could be anywhere from 3k to 8k. Then figure another 500-1000 to have the engine pulled and reinstalled. When its out, put on a new coupler also. Figure another $500.
With only 150hrs on it now, I sure wouldn't even begin to worry about it. The odds of you still having the same boat by the time that engine needs a rebuild are slim. Figure top end and valve job at 500hrs and full rebuild at 1000hrs. |
