Equalizer Anti Sway Weight Distribution Hitch???
Does anybody have experience with these hitches? I will be pulling a 38' Scarab behind a 2006 Chevy HD. Will this make a big difference? Thanks guys.

I pull a 382 Formula and had the same concern for long trips, I racked my brain over installing one. So I called the trailer company that built my trailer and he told me that I would not need it and it will tow fine and I should not worry. Well after much research of trying to get one to match up to my trailer and all the retro-fits that would have to be made I decided to bag the idea.
I ended up pulling my 382 over 650 miles without one and as the trailer company told me, it was a dream to pull and now I am a believer. No issues and if you have a good trailer set up you will not have a problem. By the way it is a manning tri-axle steel trailer w/elec/hyd disc brakes on all three axles. JB |
Nextrail told me I didn't need a weight distributing hitch. They were right, boat pulled like a dream.

Thanks for the input guys. I was thinking since the trailer is brand new it should pull without any problems. We did however get an air lift leveling kit for the rear of the truck to soften the ride.

WD hitches don't work well with surge brakes either. If you read the fine print on tow capacity, the upper figures are with WD. I did change out my GM hitch to a 15-16K hitch which is a little longer than original, in a forward direction, and it seems to have gave me a slightly better ride. Probably because it is transfering slightly more weight on the front. I was concerned about potential liability if something should happen and I am technically over the OEM rating.

Just make sure you've got the tongue weight right. You may have to play with some different ball mount heights as well. Raising the ball mount 3 inches made a huge difference on towing my 32 AT.

If you have the factory tubular style hitch you may want to change that to a square type. Been alot of problems with them.

Thanks guys. The truck does have the square type so I think we are ok there. I am going to ask the guy at Nextrail what he thinks when we pick up the trailer next week.

I run electric over hydraulic brakes, the really nice thing about have weight distribution is that it make s the truck and trailer as one. In this sense braking is better and the rig does not tend to sway at all. It also takes alot of the pressure off the ass end of the rig. If you have ever pulled a 5th wheel trailer they tow ten times better than a bumper mount. This is only because the weight is distributed better and the weight is over the axle not hangin off the rear. Just my 2 cents........

I have trouble with mine when making tight turns in a gas station. The equalizer bars bind on the inside of the turn and come undone on the outside of the turn, PITA On the freeway, they are great.
