Hydro Lock

Sh--!!!! Starter went THUNK!!!! Pulled plugs. #4 hole full of water. Cranked engive over to blow water out. Put plugs back in, engine ran fine! 2 days later, THUNK! pulled #4, water again. Engine is 540 BBC with IMCO exhaust. Any suggestions before I start pulling parts off?

tmdog 10-25-2007 07:40 AM

Intake or head gasket.

Xray50 10-25-2007 08:07 AM

Ooppss

Sorry, that was #8 hole.

Xray50 10-25-2007 08:08 AM

Intake or head? Not exhaust side?

hoozeyurdaddy 10-25-2007 08:37 AM

does the imco exaust have bolt on elbows? if so, go there first and replace the gasket.

Xray50 10-25-2007 08:49 AM

Thanks Hoozey, will do that first.

Griff 10-25-2007 12:22 PM

Try a riser gasket first. Imco flows water through the manifold riser like stock merc iron manifolds.

Xray50 10-25-2007 01:06 PM

That makes sense. With the angle of the engine the water ends up in #8 hole..... going to pull the riser and see if it's round or oval then order one from Imco.

Xray50 10-27-2007 07:26 PM

Exhaust pulled and pressure tested. Imco manifold and riser is good. Pulling intake manifold Sunday. Sure hope I find a blown gasket.

Is there water in the oil?

Xray50 10-28-2007 06:58 AM

I would check again to see if there is any water in the oil .
The dip stick will show oil but at a higher level . The water is sitting at the bottom of the oil pan . I learned this when a gasket went on one of my engines . At first I thought the oil would turn milky . But it never was mixed up yet .
Good luck. Hopefully nothing got bent .

You and your girlfriend aren,t by chance shutting down the boat and drifting stern first to the waves while trying to conceive on the back hatch before all this is happening by any chance?.

If this is true we will need pics to see if this is really your problem.

Xray50 10-28-2007 02:31 PM

Intake gasket was all messed up. Will change gaskets and then drain oil. I drain from oil plug on the bottom of the pan. That should get most of the water, if there is any out. ?My kids are grown up but we still practice conception on the boat. On the deck tho, not on the rear hatch. Keeps the water out of the exhaust that way.....will get some pictures when in KW for the races....yeah, right!!!! My wife will go for that!!!!!!

Must be an epidemic happening here. 406 SBC in my 1968 Firebird coupe. Water in the Royal Purple. No water in cylinders, just the lifter valley from a defective intake gasket.

Good excuse to pull heads and do valve job.

Fill the crankcase with half cheap oil, and half diesel. Run it for about five minutes, then drain it. This will usually cut out any emulsified oil.

Good luck Ray.

The oil cooler will need to be cleaned /blown out of any water/oil & then again for the diesel mix .:p
Good Luck

The diesel won't need to be rinsed out. Diesel has very good lubrication qualities. That's why fuel injection was widely used long before it became popular with gas engines. It should all drain out anyway.

Xray50 11-02-2007 07:34 AM

Intake back on

1 Attachment(s)
Got the manifold, carb, distributer back on. Will get exhaust back on today and see if she runs!!!!! Painted manifold and valve covers since I had them off.

rchevelle71 11-02-2007 08:33 AM

sounds good ray, give me a call when you get it running, I have an issue of my own, but I'll still go out. you got a PM.

YOLO 11-02-2007 07:04 PM

isnt there a point in tie when the intake and exhaust valves are open at the same time and creates a huge amount of vacume..I once read about a similar problem.. would happen all the time but once a day..

It's called reversion and that shouldn't be a problem if you use a cam ground for a marine application. A street cam can kill a motor in a boat unless you have full dry exhaust.

rchevelle71 11-03-2007 11:26 PM

how did you make out Ray??

Xray50 11-04-2007 06:46 AM

It's running. Went out yesterday afternoon for acouple of hours. Getting rid of the engine hatch changed the whole attitude of the boat. Really lightened the ass end. Picked up about 7 mph!!!!!
