Performance coating pistons.

Who does this, how much do they charge and is it worth the money? I bought a set of JE Pistons(over $500) 2 seasons ago and currently refreshing the engine. A few have a slight scuff on the skirt from side loading and wondered if this would help. I'm not an expert thats why i'm asking.

P.S. Go ahead and kiss my ass Thunderusone before you chime in, LOL!

There are three different coatings you can do on your piston. First is a thermal barrier on the dome. This will keep heat from entering the piston and causing excessive expansion which leads to scuffing. Second, you can coat the skirts which will not only reduce the scuffing but will also help to reduce bore ovalization- especially on high rod-angle engines. Third, you can use a thermal ablative coating on the underside of the piston to help shed heat. It basically works the reverse way that a dome coating does- it helps to wick heat out of the piston and into the iol splash from underneath. I'd also coat your wrist pins and bushings too. It's better and cheaper than gun-drilling the rods.

These guys are one of our vendors and make a quality product. They have an applicator close to you that can do it for you. http://www.techlinecoatings.com/ Lots of good tech info on their site too.

Its been a while since I had it done but , if you teflon coat the side it helps reduce the friction and then ceramic coat the tops will reflect the heat alot better . This will be to your advantage running a super charger . I had done it on my race car that I was spraying at that time , I plan on doing my new motors for my boat , plus I might coat the combustion chambers and the Exhaust runners

Polydyn,Houston, Tx and Dart Heads / Blocks are a couple more that do pistons . Chris mentions coating the pins, good insurance and we like a coating known as DLC (diamond like carbon)

The heads and intake is something else to consider, especially if used in salt water.

Hey Kenny,

What are you planning? Coated pistons, that sounds serious. Lots of boost? I have already seen you get around 85 with a burnt out cylinder.

I'm trying to reuse these pistons to save money. That dead cylinder looked as good as the rest when I tore it down. I'm losing my bore roundness on my front cylinders due to the cold water I assume.
Has Eddie got you hooked up yet on your engine?

You going to do anything to up the hp?

Yes, Eddie is building me some big power (at least big to me). Upping to 555, putting on some Dart 1 heads, bigger cam, more boost, bigger injectors,.....Things could end up getting pretty interesting.
