Alternator Help
I need to purchase a new one for the boat. The part number I took off the old one is 98555. Tag says it's a 55 amp. It has four wires. It's a vintage 1986.
The vendor sites I've been on here don't show this unit. If I plug this number into the Mercruiser product line nothing comes up, not even an alternate. Help! Thanks, Dave |

The rule of thumb used to be 55 amp for carbureted engines and 65 amp for EFI. Arco makes new replacement units if you want to stay with the 3 wire set-up. The one wire Delco mentioned by kennyo is a self-exciting unit that works fine in many applications.
Is your old one a Mando unit? |

I'm not sure if the old one is Mando or Motorola. Does it matter?
Thanks |
DBELECTRIC needs to start giving me commission. I stumbled on them a few years ago. My alt. is still going strong.

Thanks,
I will contact DBELECTRIC and order one up |
I removed the alternator yesterday and took a closer look at it, it's a Mando made in Korea. After looking at it closely I see that the pink and purple wires have a break in the insulation outside the shrink wrap. I see that the purple wire goes to the back of all the gauges. I have been chasing tach gremlins this past year. Could this bare wire, even if it's not connected cause tach problems? What does the purple wire do?
Thanks, Dave |
see your from Lancaster. I would contact Al Conti at Conti electric in Buffalo. He can rebuild your alternator for much less than a new one and when its done you can be sure its right. Dell electric in Hamburg is very good as well. I got tired of buying rebuilds from Napa or Autozone and have them fail in less than a year. Im from Angola by the way.
