I've also considered using a seperate oil cooler for a marine endurance race application but am nervous about their reliability. In our style of racing, every time you add something new, it also gives you something new to fail or cause a problem during a long race. I also like to keep my oil around 220-240F so finding a thermostat may be a problem unless I reduce coolant line size to compensate, which isn't what I would like to do.

Hardin 3" Combo cooler Install

I have been running the Hardin 3" cooler with -10 lines with a remote filter. I also opted for the combo cooler for the powersteering since it was an option and saves space.

You will also have to monitor the oil temp so plan on that install too. I run my temp sensor at the filter head and oil pressure and the block.

First of all i only boat in Lake Havasu and the temps in that region range from 100 to 115 all summer long.

I can run across the lake at WOT and usually only run to 220, but the amazing thing is that i never realized what my actual oil temp was until i installed the oil temp gauge.

The motor in th picture is a 540 with an Arizona Speed and Marine kit installed, but prior to this i ran a blown engine and never had an issue, but had to idle around a bit prior to being able to throw the hammer down.

My friends hit the 5 mile bouys and hammer down, well with the oil temp gauge you can see your actual temps and ease her up on plane till you get the oil temp to 160 to 180 before running her hard.

Krumbsnatcher .... can you run 3500-4000 and get temps up over 200*?

not at 3500 or 4000 it keeps the temps around 195 to 210 at those RPM's. Only when i lay into it for a long run will i see the temps climb to the temps which will cause me to reduce the throttle.

On mine around 3300-3800 is will climb to around 210-220.if I go faster the temp drops to 180-190 and stays,maybe therm opening up or water flow?its never been above 230 even at 8.5 lbs of boost,

Just ordered one from Kirk at Elite Marine, I'll post how it works when I get her in the water (it will be a month or so - the motor's not in the boat yet and we still have ice on the lakes around here!)
