280 K-planes is it normal

When I use the finger switch on the throttle to position my k-planes the port side goes about 1/2 way down before the starboard side kicks in and starts going down. Is this the norm? I would think they would travel together. And I was also wondering about the 380 k-planes on my 32' Velocity would they do a better job than the 280's or are the 280's what I should stay with, that's what came on it. 496 ho's . I don't know anything about a boat but I got one.

They should travel at very close to the same speed. One should not start moving after the other. Are you sure its not just the indicator cable sticking???

Cabels are not stinking, it does seem one pump is faster than the other, seems as fast as a trim pump and not a plane pump wonder if someone put a trim pump on the tab instead of a plane pump or is there even any difference in the pumps?

MOBILEMERCMAN 12-28-2007 10:32 AM

Is it a single switch or two toggles? When you say kicks in do you mean the motor starts making noise or the plane starts to move?

UNSANE 12-28-2007 11:31 AM

On my boat, one does travel a little faster than the other one, but they do both start moving at the same time.

single switch on the throttle along with a trim switch on the throttle, them I have 4 rocker switches for the trim and the tabs,

JasonSmith 12-28-2007 12:05 PM

They should move very close to the same speed. Check the connections at the pump. Check the fluid levels.
I would, judging by the comments you made about not knowing much about boats. I would take it to a shop & have it looked at.

Yes I'm dumber than a box of rocks when it comes to boats, I did just have it serviced, a silinoid was out and they took them off and cleaned them, fresh fluid. Is there a difference in trim pumps and tab pumps as far as the speed they operate?

JasonSmith 12-28-2007 03:02 PM

I don't know? If there is, I want faster ones all the way around.
I'm dumb too, don't feel bad.

MOBILEMERCMAN 12-28-2007 03:18 PM

Jason made a good suggestion too.
But back to the switches, do the pumps work consistently and evenly when you use the separate switches? Or is it only a problem with the override/ single switch?

Jim I will have to get back to you when I get back home to check that, I'm down in Texas working on the Space Shuttle, I mean a drilling rig. When I get back to Oklahoma I will check that and get back to you. Thanks my friends. K.C.

By the way, a drive pump will drive a tab much faster than a tab pump. I know, I have drive pumps running my tabs, and wow, I just bump my tab rockers and get instant tab response.

That's what it has to be, I have one drive pump and one plane pump causing the one tab to move faster than the other. Someone has changed the pump. Not good they need to be the same fast or slow but the same speed. Thanks Nova

Probably the seal on the ram has corrosion behind it causing a bind and slow operation. Seen it before.
