Rhoads lifters
 

I had pump up problem on my SBC 383 with CompCam 850 lifters last season (max rpm 6500). Do you have experience with Rhoads V-MAX Super Lube Roller lifters (are they that good at idle and low rpm as adverised) or should I use GM Performance 88958689 lifters (about $ 100 less a set)?
My racing rpm is up to 6000.

Go with Crane if you run high rpm hydraulics, CompCams should stick to springs and cam shafts . Crane machines their own lifters and with the correct spring and pre load we spin them up to 7000 rpms with zero issues.

I have seen nothing but problems with them. I wouldn't use them if you gave them to me free.

I tried them in a 460 Ford on RV torque cam (low RPM). No luck with them either they had to come out.

Rhoads lifters will kill your valve springs after a sustained high rpm run. They are OK on a street engine. Check your seat pressure vs original. A loss of 20 lbs may cost you 20% high rpm power loss.
This is form personal experience on 2 450 horsepower 350 Chevrolets.

I would not use Rhoades lifters in any motor. My personal opinion.
Most problems that arise with hydraulic roller lifters are caused by poor oiling, incorrect valve train geometry, incorrect valve spring pressures at open and closed, bad cam profiles, and overly heavy valve train and rockers. A small block with correct head and camshaft setup as mentioned above should be able to turn 6500 rpms with good GM or quality aftermarket hydraulic roller lifters all day long.

For my last 355 SBC I originally bought Comp retrofit hyd roller lifters. Before installing I went with the advice of CStraub and sold them and bought a set of Morels. They were $100 more but when I compared the two it made the Comp lifters look like Toys.

If you want the best go for Morel or Crane. They both have great track records. I'm using Morels in my 385ci SBC with a 23X/24X hyd roller at 145-150 seat and 350 open spring pressure. No problems. Spin up to 6000 rpms.

For Idiots to say "I Have Rhoades Lifters" and try to appear knowledgeable, To Impress another Idiot that knows even less.
Comp cams and Crane Really have spent millions on research and development. If it's the right lifter for you, they have it.
Stuff like Rhodes lifters are things from yesteryear, and aren't the cats meow anymore if they ever were.
