rebuilt 502's

I have two 7 years old 502's with 580 hours in my boat. one engine uses now to much oil, need to rebuilt or re power with 496's.
My mechanic is telling me that re building is risky may be too much rust built up.
are there new long blocks around?
what is the best solution here,
thank you

Rebuild. A stock 502 rebuild should not cost more than a few thousand per motor. I have rebuilt 468's for less than that, including all machine work . As long as the motors have not gernaded, machine work is not that expensive, and well, rebuild "kits" are very reasonable.

Why would they have rust built up in them?

You should not have rust/corrosion issues unless the engine was used in salt and not flushed properly.

use the boat in the Gulf, I do flush them but slatwater is really aggressive,

Rebuilds are not very expensive. With an intake and cam change you can really wake those engines up.

You won't know wether you can use the blocks until you take off the intake and look at the water jackets.

You would be amased at how much rust one of those can take before you can't use it at all.

I just took 2 in on trade if you want a couple longblocks. I am rebuilding them before they sell, so they will be fresh.

PM me if interested.
