Water .. pull your motors grab the 496 stroker rotating assembly from dyna flo, 1800.00 take & bore & hone your block, have your heads pocket ported a tad , buy a weind 177 blower on ebay for 1200.00-1500.00 and throw a holley 850 on there and your 600 to 650 5 lbs and your good to go ..give Leon at Dereberry a call and he'll tell you the same .just did the same exact project and its in a 24 Nova and waiting for warm weather to dial it in . i think we did this one for about 4500.00

Waterboy,

I have 2 468's I can make you a deal on.

I sent you a PM with the details.

James 02-01-2008 04:12 PM

RunninHot - I only suggest lots of caution if Scott does the assembly - he surely has great tallents - but if his shop is a disaster then that sometimes the product can be affected. I visted his place one year ago and the "dyno" was something that looked like it "once was" - after vsiting his shop - no way could I buy an assembled product from Dyno-flo cheap or not

Only thing i know is that his motors stayed together and still to this date , and he built them for peanuts compared to the 48,000.00 one i had built in Havasu that was by P** MARINE that lasted about 2 hours and was sent back 8xs in 1 year with broken cams, distributor gear teeth eaten off every other weekend , snapped cranks at 5000 rpm and same boat, same driver, same BBC .... any how i seen alot of motors on pallets waiting to get loaded on semis so he must be doing something right ,anyhow if i needed a decent motor i'd have SCOTT do it , when i repower the SKATER , or need BIG power it will be Leon DEREBERRY or DAVE @ Wesco ..
ROCK ON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

oh, and we got two 572's from scott at dynoflo last year and the engines have run flawless at 700hp. He could build them in his closet if he wanted to as long as the run like these babies do.

Right on Tosh , as long as Scott keeps putting the motors together himself and leaves the helpers answering the phone .
Let me know if you have probs putting the tabs & pumps on and i'll get the manuel from Mell Riggs :D

waterboy, have you checked with Moritz/Marine Assault in Tulsa. He's close, does good work, reasonable priced and he may have something in his shop that fits your bill.

Plus I could get about $33k for my boat (if i sat on it for 2 years with a for sale sign cause of this stupid market).By the time i found something that has what I wanted and for that price, itd still be a fixer upper i think..

So there is really NOTHING I can do to these motors to bump the horsepower? Maybe Ill just spend the money on rebuilding the motors and dressing them up a little and be happy with my 70mph and reliability.

My first boat had 330's I junked the heads and exhaust and got some heads rebuilt them with mild cam and good intake and it was night and day.

Ron does great work good honest guy and can steer you in the right direction.

Ryan8886 02-01-2008 06:45 PM

Question....

Not that it makes all THAT much difference, but he should be running a Gen V 330. I've got the same motors, in fact I think my boat was buit right after or shortly after his. I've been looking into the same project and I thought I read that the Gen V motors all came with 4 bolt mains??

Water.....do a search...there's a couple threads on here from a few years ago about hopping up the 7.4's....it IS possible. I think KAMMA posted a bunch of stuff about how to do it at a reasonable price for pretty close to 500hp.

Ryan8886 02-02-2008 03:32 AM

By the time you upgrade your 454s your gonna have about $7500 in parts plus machine work plus a fee for moritz to put it together if you dont know how. guessing $3500 for machine work and assembly. And you still have cast crank, stock rods.

Pistons, roller cams, roller lifters, timing chain, pushrods, gasket set, bearings, rings, square ports heads, intake, carb.
I would buy 2 crate motors and be done. Jegs has complete World 509 540hp 575ft/lbs. for $8899.
Sell your 454s.

WOW $3500 for machine work and assembly , i pay less then 500.00 for line bore & hone & brass freeze plugs and another 500.00 for assembly . If your paying 3500.00 i sure hope you get a KISS along with phuckin:D

Yes, the Gen V's are 4 bolt mains - see http://www.mortec.com/bbc.htm

I took my '94 454 Gen V blocks and stock cranks to the local shop and he wants to stroke them - 4.25 w/6.385 rods, but i've read some scary stuff about piston wobble and oil ring failures and engine life reduction with this configuration. I'm leaning towards stock cranks - rods - JE/SRP 9.3-5:1and an HR cam kit (mild-medium), although I love the idea of 496's..

That pricing is closer. The only way you are spending a ton of money is if you are letting them port and polish your heads, which is BS, because you should be finding someone with a CNC machine to do a better job for half the price.

496s

Hey guys been reading your threads great stuff!! I was wandering Can anyone build a reliable 496 from a stock 4bolt block using dart alm. heads 10.2 compression and still get 625 -650 hp @ 5000 rpm or so? I have a builder that claims he can, he is pretty well known in drag racing and he knows thers a big dif. in marine motors.I think he uses comp cams to guide him on cam selection.Im worried about reversion if its a big cam.Any thoughts? thanks

You will have to go more than 5k rpm to get tha Hp.

To get to that HP you'll have to aggressively cam it and spin it to 5800 or so And that would wound your midrange. Racecar guys just don't understand the powerband needs of the recreational boater. The bump to 10.2CR is unnecessary. Stay around 9.5.

A good rule of thumb- look at the offerings of every successful marine performance engine builder. If Chief, Zul, Sterling, et al offer 572's at 650, there's a reason.

Personally I wouldn't spring for the JE's. I'm also thinking you're low on cam/lifter price and really high on heads. Good iron rectangles for these motors can be found relatively cheaply

I'm still agreeing- looking for performance from these motors is a losing proposition
