Need help on Alternators

3 Attachment(s)
Here are the alternators off our boat. All I can find is 140 amp alternetors it says 1 wire. Ok so whats the deal with that? On ours it has a plug with 2 wires a arange wire off of a nipple and a black wire on a bolt. So will these one wire alternators work.
I know I ask some dumb stuff here at times but man I wish I knew somethings about the marine aspect of repair.

Thanks
Jeff and Jessica

Do not alter or change your alternator. Your ecm is set up to be use with a certain alternator. Stick with the same thing that you have now. And use all the wires that are on the engine. Unless you wanna but an ecm which I don;t think you wanna. Trust me on this. I work for a premeir mecury dealership !!

If you want the merc replacements you could call Mel Riggs at Riggs marine. 920 872 2728

Not sure how close you are to him but he ships and might have them in stock

If I remember right, his original issue was needing a higher amperage alternator which if he goes back with Merc parts he'll be in the same boat (pardon the pun). The charge rate of the alternator shouldn't have any effect on an ECM. Now, if the field or sense wires aren't connected (as in the 1-wire setup) maybe that will have some effect. I put 1-wires on my old carbed motors. They are just self-exciting units.

dbelectric on the web. Send him a pic and maybe he can match it or upgrade your units. He will be way cheaper and has good quality.

Take thos alternators that you have to a good rebuilder. Ask them to rewind them for more output. I have had this done in the past.
