I want more power!

I have a 2004 496HO motor has about 70 hrs on it. I want to spend $10,000 or less to get more power. Right now my 28' sunsation does 69mph. I would love 10 more mph if possible. I am thinking 2 ways build my motor(possible Raylar kit) or sell my motor and buy something else. Whats mine 496HO worth??? I really don't want to buy a motor from someone I don't know. I would consider someone I don't know that has a great repuation in the industry. It seems to build a fuel injected motor with 600hp will run me about $22,000 +- to do it right with all the install parts and labor form the motor builder I trust. I don't want a procharger (blower to load for me) any ideas or any suggestions! bring it?? lefts her ideas!!

I like the title of this thread. All I can say is, dont we all!

Seriously though, I personally dont have experience working a 496, but there are several here who have used both Raylars and Tyler Crocketts kits with great success. I am sure guys will chime in. Maybe run a search and see what comes up. I feel your expectations of 10 mph from a kit may be a bit much. Be aware... if you are running a standard Bravo, it will not be happy with your new plans for power. Do you have hydraulic steering? Good tabs?

KAAMA 02-04-2008 06:00 PM

If you have a 496, then I would do the Raylar kit. He's done all the guess work for you.

Hot 4 Teacher 02-04-2008 06:59 PM

I'd suggest a Raylar upgrade for anyone looking to add a few ponies to their 496. Whether it's a HO or not, after the custom Whipple II/Raylar PCM upgrade, it's all the same. :D If you have questions, give Ray a call, or you could check out Full Throttle Marine's website http://fullthrottlemarine.com/ . I've talked with Ray and Bob several times and they both know what's going on.

If you have a basic question, shoot me a PM.

Good luck!

DMOORE 02-04-2008 09:14 PM

A buddy Whippled his 496HO 2 years ago. He picked up 15MPH on a 28 ft deck boat. I think it's right around your price range.

Darrell.

Griff 02-04-2008 11:13 PM

Raylar kit is th way to go, but I don't think it will get 10mph, Probably 7-8mph. Do you have hyd steering??? What drive do have????

Wild Card 09 02-05-2008 02:12 AM

Just to cover all the variations, and because this is the route that I went, when I wanted more power in my 496 powered boat . consider putting a 525 in it.

Not really the 10K or less solution, but consider the fact that resale of a 288 Sunny with a stock 525 in it - has gotta be better than when you start explaining about which parts on the 496 are new and how many hours they have.

There are ever more 525īs turning up in the classifieds at around 20k, as the trend goes to 600 and 700īs in the bigger boats.
Your low hour 496HO should bring you 8-10K.

560 solid horsepower right the way up to the conservative 5350 revlimiter. The motor sounds and runs like the race motor that it is, and has dockside credibility that puts you at eyelevel with the Cig owners.

Not to say that Raylar and Whipple donīt make extremely cool equipment, but bone stock and wicked fast ...is nice.

These are important questions, please let us know.

Whassup 02-05-2008 07:04 AM

Thanks for the relpies, to answer a few questions! Yes I will put on steering, and build the drive, install drive shower. I have talked with a few people and ran some #'s kinda feeling I need 600HP at the crank to go around 80mph+. Seems 560-575 at the prop would definately get it done. So the question is what are my options?? I don't want to put $10,000 in knowing I could of put in $12,000 and been where I want. I think Raylar 525 kit with only put me around 75-77mph. Just wondering if I add headers and Whipple@ ecm would get me close??? Can anyone shed light on the motor he builds I understand he builds a 625 hp+ motor and swap over injecion and other stuff! I think its around $12,000?? Anyone ever buy one? Any other suggestions would be great! I know don't we all want more power!!! Getting there is half the fun. But not hitting you goal sucks

How to get a 600+HP 496Mag or HO

Whassup
Just to speak to our equipment and engines for the 496HO.
The Raylar HO600 makes 625HP at the crankshaft and should easily get you 575HP plus at the prop.
This engine is our BCK106 kit on top of a 496 block that has been redone by us with all new forged crankshaft, forged pistons, forged rods, special oil pump, billet damper and larger throttle body. We then reprogram your ECM for the new power requirements. You will need headers like Dana or CMI to make 600+ HP and you will have a very reliable quick 496.
If you PM Escape Velocity here on OSO he has had one of our HO600 setups for over two years and loves it. There are about 20 or so Raylar HO600's around the world right now so if you are serious call me at (866) 496-8181 Pacific Time and I will give you more people to get references from if you need them. We can also discuss the exact price and details. If you ship us your motor we can rework the engine in our shop and install the complete package and send the motor back to you ready to drop in and run. We have just completed six HO600's this way and they have just been installed. This engine makes a tremendous package and the same engine in our 28 Laveycraft ran 88mph at last years LOTO!
Hope to talk to you soon if you need a motor by this Memorial day.

Best Regards,
Ray @ Raylar

Thats your best option if you ask me. No super charger ontop of stock internals to worriy about, and to be honest these hulls of ours can get little loose over 80. the 625 hp kit sounds like the way I would go if I had a 496.

I've had my 01 288 to 85 mph, she is very much a drivers boat! I am running a four blade because it excellerates the best and I see the best top speed with it. But the boat is loose. Very trim and tab sensitive over 80 with the four blade. I have Hydraulic steering, you NEED hyd steering to run that hull that speed!

Now if you run a five blade the boat is alot more stable, but slower, and the five blade is harder on the drive. It feels like it is planting the boat down, if that makes sence.

My 2 cents.

Griff 02-05-2008 09:17 PM

In your oringinal post you said "blower to load for me"...did you mean too loud???? If so, blower motors are not any louder than equally powered N/A engines.

Also, is the hyd steering included in the budget of 10k. Its gonna run at least 3k by itself.

I just don't see you getting to 80mph for 10k from where you're at now, and still remain safe and reliable.

I'll vouch for this quote. You guys have no idea how hard it is for me to not post my deal yet. I made a slight mistake on choice of prop etc and I'm holding out until I have an "actual" speed to post. We will be posting a nice detailed list of results, pictures, etc hopefull soon.

But for now -

Hell yeah. Raylar.

SDFever 02-06-2008 12:01 AM

I forgot to also mention that the service is excellent!

Whassup 02-06-2008 09:31 AM

SDFever give me a taste? What did you buy? and give me your best guess of speed.
Griff, I sorry typo loud, I don't like the wine of a blower.. Am I stuck on $10,000 "no" its a goal only. That price only includes motor work not, steering, prop, drive ect: Its on top of the money I would get by selling my engine if I am putting in a different one. So it could be $18,000 if I sell my motor for $8,000. Just looking not to waste money only looking for the best bang for the buck going nautral asperated! I want like everyone does the most speed for the money!! but that big ole reliable word always hangs around!!

Escape Velocity 02-06-2008 08:05 PM

I'm really happy with my Raylar HO600. The last two years have been nothing but putting gas in the tank and changing the engine oil from a reliability standpoint. Even after upgrading the drive from Bravo X to XR (which requires more horsepower to turn the gears) and adding mufflers, I picked up over 12 mph with my 28' Velocity. This kind of power increase completely transformed the boat. If you go the HO 600 route, you wind up with forged pistons and upgraded rods which also gives me peace of mind.

Whassup 02-12-2008 07:04 PM

I decided to build a 540 motor! 650hp or so. alittle more money but after I sold my engine it wasn't to many thousands over budget. but I will be where I want! I'll post speeds/results in
the spring!

Quaid24 02-13-2008 09:40 AM

Good for you, Whassup!

I think you made the right decision. Spend the money once and get where you want to be, instead of disappointments.
