Default Gen 5 502 blocks

Any issues with using these blocks in a moderate performance (650-700 hp) engine? What are the differences between these and the Gen 6?

I also think the there is a difference in how the oiling takes place. I think Gen 6 does the crank first, then cam etc.

I have 2 Gen 6 shortblocks for sale. One is a fresh rebuild with 509 ci with SRP pistons and the other one was rebuilt in 2005 and has no issues with 75 hours on it. Both motors made around 750hp.

Chris,
The biggest difference in the two is that the V was not a factory hydraulic roller and the VI is. The V does not have the bosses in the lifter valley to bolt down the spider to hold the lifter dog bones. You must use a retrofit hyd. lifter in a V, whereas the VI's have the GM hyd. lifters. The V has a ten bolt timing cover and the VI has 6 bolts. They use the same oil pan and both have a one piece rear main seal. The heads are also the same. They both accept aftermarket gen IV style heads.
You should have no problem at all with the block in the power level you are shooting for. I am currently building a 540 with a Procharger that should be in the 825 hp neighborhood with a Gen VI block. Let me know if you have any more questions, Eddie.
