Oil Filter Drain
I remember seeing somewhere an adapter/spacer that went between the oil filter and oil thermostat housing that allowed you to drain the oil from the filter before removing it thereby avoiding the usual mess that comes when you change filters. If anybody has a name or phone number please help me out.
Thanks, Valley Boy |
Just punch a small hole in the top of the filter and the oil will drain out. A couple of buddies tried it and it works great.

I have not seen the adapter you asking about. But I use a Zip-lock freezer bag:rolleyes: . It works great. First you crack the filter loose, not to the point that it leaks, but loose enough to turn by hand. Then you place the zip-lock bag around the filter and finish taking it off. The filter and oil all go into the bag and there is no mess in your boat.
Of course this only works if the filter hangs below the mounting plate. The new Mercs are a different story. I like the hole idea. What do you catch the oil with ? |
Ditto on the zip-lock bag. Works great no mess.

h2owarrior, I think that the oil drains back into the line so there is no need to catch any oil.

There was a guy INNOVATIVE marine in MI who advertised this 1-2 years ago in the back of PB mag. I don't know if he is still around.

25Daytona, You punch the hole in the top of the filter ? If that is true, I see how it works. The hole breaks the suction created in the filter allowing the oil to drain. Do I have that right ?

Thanks guy's for the info. The punch a hole in the filter sounds like the deal. I was looking at the oil thermostat housing and you could actually drill and tap and a drain valve in it if you wanted to and avoid a spacer of any kind. I'll go the punched vent hole route.
Thanks, Valley Boy |
Thast guy in MI is out there but have not had any luck getting a hold of him in the last year...he was in frazer but that was in 1999..oh well he had a great idea..
